Top 10 Tips!

Following our trip, here are our top 10 tips for people thinking of copying us (some of these we did, some we didn't)...
  1. Modify your routes to start and finish at your accommodation (this will stop the faff at the end and start of each day)
  2. Have a support vehicle that can carry you and all your gear, including your bikes (you never know what might happen!)
  3. Pack your stuff to have a quick turn around each day; e.g. non-cycling days separately, first week separately from week two (lugging all your gear into and out of your accommodation each day can become a bit of a drag!)
  4. Book evening meals in advance, and if possible plan for lunch stops as well (there's nothing worse than having to sort all of this out when you are cold, wet and tired or lost!)
  5. Have at least one Garmin (or equivalent), especially for getting though the towns
  6. Don't rely on ferries!
  7. Always carry waterproofs and spare inner tubes (rain and punctures will always happen!)
  8. If you can, take a couple of (front and back) spare wheels (these are the things that tend to break first!), or better still a spare bike for spares
  9. Make sure everyone has a mobile phone (smart phone with maps if possible) and have a variety of networks for coverage
  10. Plan for a day off (or a short day at least). Try and stop in a nice hotel with a swimming pool, jacuzzi etc.
  11. Don't forget the chamois cream and sudocrem
  12. Don't use energy gels all day, they rot your guts
  13. B&Bs outside major towns/cities are best
